The Afghan Psychology
( Iqbal’s Mehrab Gul Ke Afkar )
O
my highland! Leaving thee where should I go?
In thy rocks is contained my forefathers' dust,
From the first day thou art destination of falcons and eagles,
Free from tulips and flowers, free from songs of nightingales,
In thy bends and twists
abides my lofty heaven,
Thy dust is sweet-smelling! Thy water is
refulgent!
A falcon will never accept dominance of
pheasants and doves,
For
lavishness of life I cannot kill my soul,
O my high-minded piety! What is thy
decision?*
Princely award of the west or the clothe in
tatters?
* Piety means taqwa that is dauntless devotion to Allah swt.
* Piety means taqwa that is dauntless devotion to Allah swt.
Part – 2
Rivalry between
nations is an eternal fact,
Old firmament favours none, neither thee nor me,
Realise thy self, don’t be disappointed of the troubles,
For, the troubles faced will correct thy weakness,
It is thee that will remain unique and incomparable,
If it dawns upon thy heart “
Allah has no partners”.
Part-3
Thy prayer cannot change the decree of
God,
But, it is just possible that thou would
change,
If in thy self a revolution develops,
Not surprising! It may all
round change,
Quraanic rules and its effects will remain unchanged,
Thy
efforts and others’ attitude will become changed,
Thy prayer is that thy aspiration be
fulfilled,
My prayer is that thy aspiration be changed.

Part – 4
Whether the curved sky, whether the sun or the moon,
All are in motion, fatigued of journey,
Alexander
burst like thunder!
Thou
are informed O the sudden death!
Nadir
looted the wealth of Delhi,
An
strike of the sword finished his life,
The
Afghans survived, so did their land,
God’s rule on God’s land,
Necessity cripples a sovereign being,
Necessity forces a lion to profess like a fox,
Part – 5
This school, this play, this noise in haste,
In this ample luxury every moment is new sorrow,
That is not learning but poison for the sovereign,
The result of which is two handfuls of barley grains,
O the unmindful! Literature and philosophy are nothing,
For providing technology great
efforts are needed,
Technology is preferable to natural arts,
It can convert darkness of
evening into light of dawn,
If an engineer wishes, by means of technology,
Can do wonders and improve quality of life.
Part – 6
Who is an
inventor in the world of inventions,
Gets respect from people in all ages,
Do not spoil thy originality by conformation,
Protect it as this pearl is peerless,
Message of renewal suits that nation,
In whose imagination abides night-clubs,
But, I apprehend this voice of renewal of culture,
In the east is a pretext to adopt the western culture.
